Beyond the Frame | Spirit Moving 2024

A visit to the American Art Museum to view When the Spirits Moved Them, followed by brown bag lunch and workshop at St. Mark's
Exploring movement and spirituality in liturgy

On January 24, we will visit the American Art Museum to view When the Spirits Moved Them, They Moved and accompanying exhibit. The video is a choreogaphed reimagining of 19th-century spiritual gatherings that took place in the preserved meetinghouse at Pleasant Hill Shaker Village in Kentucky (filmography by Mariam Ghani, choreography by Erin Ellen Kelly).

The video and images are part of the museum’s exhibit “Musical Thinking: New Video Art and Sonic Strategies.”

We will meet at the museum at the main desk by the F Street entrance, view the exhibit, then return to St Mark’s for a brown bag lunch, discussion, and movement workshop.

  • 10:45 a.m.: Meet at the American Art Museum, F St NW entrance.
  • 12:30 p.m. Gather at St. Mark’s for a brown bag lunch, discussion, and workshop. Room TBD.
