Much to Report from Our Afghan Families

Learn various ways parishioners are welcoming newcomers from Afghanistan

Latifa Haidari and Barkat Azizi have moved to a more affordable apartment near Congressional Cemetery. This has enabled them to keep their jobs at Eastern Market Trader Joe’s and to continue their ESL classes. With Lucy Brown’s guidance, St. Mark’s and Washington Community Fellowship purchased a much-needed new computer for Barkat’s IT classes. Yusef Stanikzai celebrated his fifth birthday with friends at Burnt Hill Elementary kindergarten. His mother and her friends are continuing their ESL classes with Andrea Harles of CC+WP. Michael Crawford from CC+WP is tutoring the Tokhi’s 8th-grade son.

The first family we assisted back in 2017 is still struggling to adjust to life here. Karen Getman is working with fellow Episcopalians close to where they now live to provide support as needed to resolve some of the issues. As Afghan refugees continue to arrive, Good Neighbors Capitol Hill is still furnishing apartments to assist their resettlement.

If you would like to help with these efforts, please contact Karen Getman.
