Christ in the Rubble
What is the Nativity display in the courtyard? This is a replica of a creche first displayed by Palestinian Christians in the Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem in 2023 in solidarity with the people of Gaza. It portrays baby Jesus surrounded by rubble from Israeli bombs paid for by US taxpayers. It shows the contrast between the divine hope, peace, love, and joy of Advent against the continuing genocide and ethnic cleansing in the land where the story of Advent takes place. Even with the recent “ceasefire deal, ” the U.S. government and Christian nationalists continue to support ethnic cleansing in the land where Jesus was born. As we sit in holy darkness this advent and fight against an illegal military occupation in DC, Christ in the Rubble is a calling for us to reflect on our sacred responsibility to pursue justice and peace in Palestine.
