Pledging: Frequently Asked Questions
What is a pledge?
A pledge is a notification of what you intend to give in a given time period. Each fall at St. Mark’s, we ask our members to pledge what they think they will be able to give in the coming year.
Why is it important to give?
As Christians, we believe we are called to give our time, talent, and treasure. Pledging is the treasure portion of that. We also ask you to give time and talent through volunteering in a ministry of our church like singing in the choir or assisting with grate patrol sandwich-making.
Why is it important to pledge? Where does my pledge go?
Pledges make up the vast majority of the St. Mark’s operating budget. Our fall stewardship campaign helps the vestry set the budget for the coming year. That money pays our clergy and staff, keeps the building running, and funds our ministries.
What are pledge payments?
Pledges are a notice of what you intend to give but pledge payments are the actual donations you make to fulfill that pledge. You can make one payment to fulfill the entire pledge or make as many payments as you like throughout the year. Many people opt to set up automatic payments, which you can do through Realm.
Where can I fill out a pledge form?
We’re glad you asked! You can fill out a pledge form on paper and hand it to an usher or online at https://onrealm.org/StMarksDC/-/form/pledge/2026pledge
What is Realm and how can I get a login?
Realm is the parish management system that we use to manage our finances and directory. If you would like a log-in, you can email our Parish Administrator for Finance, Annick Milde at pfa[at]stmarks.net
Should my spouse and I pledge separately or together?
That is up to you. Some couples pledge separately, and others submit together. The most important thing is to make sure both your names are associated with the pledge if you intend to pledge together.
I set up automatic payments/withdrawals. Does that mean I pledged?
Setting up automatic payments is not the same as a pledge. Please total the sum of your automatic payments for the year and submit that as a pledge. Also, please note that automatic payments do not carry over year to year in Realm. You will need to set them up each year.
What if I make a pledge for 2026 and my circumstances change?
These are uncertain times. We understand if you pledge an amount that is no longer right for you. Please contact Annick Milde, our Parish Administrator for Finance, if/when that happens and she can adjust. You can contact her at pfa[at]stmarks.net.
Can I still make a one-off donation if I don’t want to pledge?
Yes! We will always take a one-off donation.
My company has a matching program for giving. Can the church benefit from that?
We may be able to. Contact Annick Milde if you have any questions about this, at pfa[at]stmarks.net.
What is the relationship between pledging, membership, and the annual meeting?
Pledging is a requirement for membership. Pledging also enables you to have a vote at the annual business meeting of the church, which is held in early February each year.
