Summary: The Children, Youth, and Family Ministries (CYFM) Director is an ambassador to the internal and external community, nurturing intergenerational connections, recruiting lay leaders and volunteers and centering the work of CYFM in the life of the congregation. This is a full-time position offering a comprehensive total compensation package that aligns with diocesan guidelines.
The Director will:
- Work in close partnership with other staff and church leaders, including but not limited to the Rector and other clergy, Vestry members, worship leaders, children and youth choir director, and Senior Warden.
- Build relationships with current and new families to integrate them into CYFM.
- Empower lay leaders to run CYFM’s program and event offerings.
- Take on oversight and hands-on leadership over certain programs and events; this could include, for example, children’s chapel, Sunday School organization and communications, special community-wide events, confirmation class, and children and youth programs at church retreats.
- Attend and participate in CYFM programming and events to foster enthusiasm and connections among children, youth and families.
- Participate in the administrative tasks of running CYFM including budgeting, scheduling, and record-keeping.
- Administer the Safe Church, Safe Communities online training program.
- Manage certain administrative aspects of the 0-3 nursery program.
We seek someone who:
- Is enthusiastic about and committed to working with children, teens, parents and volunteers to create an environment where young people are called into a deeper relationship with God and each other.
- Has a deep respect for children’s and teen’s wisdom, creativity, and sense of justice; and enjoys spending time with congregants of all ages.
- Welcomes questions and conversation about faith, and encourages young people to be spiritually curious, socially engaged, and unapologetically themselves.
- Has an ability to navigate difficult conversations and manage healthy conflict.
- Has demonstrable experience with administrative tasks such as budgeting, volunteer management, keeping a group calendar, scheduling meetings; and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Has a good sense of humor and a commitment to community, even in all its messiness.
- Can operate in a community organizer model of weaving a web of connections and relationships to nurture our community.
- Is prepared to work in close partnership with the CYFM Board (lay members), embracing a strong culture of staff-lay collaboration.
About us: St. Mark’s Episcopal Church is a progressive church in Washington, DC, committed to inclusiveness, radical hospitality, and social justice. Our church offers in-person services (with live streaming of one service), and last year, our Annual Sunday Attendance was approximately 260 across three Sunday services. We currently have 273 pledging families.
Job Type: Full-time, 40 hours/week (with some flexibility for remote work, following an initial in-person onboarding period, to be arranged with Rector)
Pay range: $51,000 – $54,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
Benefits: Paid Time off. Full Health, Dental, and Vision insurance plus Disability Coverage amounting to approximately $14,500/year. Employer 403(b) contribution of 5% of base salary; 403(b) match of up to 4% of base salary.
Work Hours: Sunday through Thursday, including occasional evening meetings (often virtual) and events on Saturdays. Travel for weekend retreats and a summer week-long trip will also be required not to exceed 10 days per year. It should not exceed 40 hours/week on average.
