Curriculum Overview:
The Christian Education program at St. Mark's is a hallmark of our communal life. For children ages 3 through grade 5, we offer the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program in three age-level classes. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. In a Catechesis Sunday School class, the child can ponder a biblical passage or a prayer from the liturgy by taking the material for that text and working with it. For example, placing wood figures of sheep in a sheepfold of the Good Shepherd, setting sculpted apostles around a Last Supper table, or preparing a small altar with the furnishings used for the Eucharist. We invite you to join our Catechesis classes, located in the Undercroft of the church.
For teens in middle school or high school, St. Mark’s offers a functional education model in which adult facilitators listen to and help discern the issues of life, community, and faith that seem to resonate most for the youth in the class. The adult facilitators then strive to engage the class in challenging discussions regarding difficult choices in their lives and relate these discussions to scriptural lessons and choices faced by people we read about in the Bible.
