Teen Service Trip: New Orleans, LA  - June 23-20, 2012

In light of the unfortunate cancellation of our trip to Honduras this year, we're planning a teen service trip to New Orleans with Episcopal Community Services, through the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana.  We will be staying with St. Anna’s Epsicopal Church in the Treme neighborhood and working at Dodwell House, a community center being built to support the church’s outreach, after school & Hispanic ministries. As a group, we will address issues currently facing the region including Katrina aftermath and recovery, poverty, immigration, environmental concerns, as well as traditional New Orleans culture (music & food!)  We hope that this trip will provide a space for our youth to have a transformative, challenging and FUN experience together. If you would like to be involved, please contact Marcella.

Our next group meeting (parents and youth) will be on April 15 at 11:15am in the Adams Room.

Honduras and Wake Up the Earth Update:

Although we will not be sponsoring a youth trip to Honduras this year, we want to keep vibrant our 20-year long work in that country and continue to strengthen our relationship with the people of the Trinidad region. Our strong hope is to send young St. Mark’s parishioners to Honduras next summer and to host a full Wake Up the Earth fund-raiser in April of 2013.

This year, however, we will do something a little different: we will have a Wake Up the Earth-style celebration on the evening of April 21 (save the date!). Join us then for an all-Earth Day party in true St. Mark’s style (good food, good fun) as we lift up our parish’s environmental stewardship work locally and in Honduras. No auction but lots of other opportunities to help and to enjoy a “rock the nave” event!

For questions, please contact Jane Sherman (or 202-363-8138) or Julie Murphy  (or 703-893-6522).

St. Mark’s offers a variety of outreach projects open for our youth and families to join. Some outreach ministries our families enjoy attending include: the shelter project with Capitol Hill Group Ministries, making lunches for the Grate Patrol, supporting Sustainable Harvest International, and conducting a mini-walk for Samaritan Ministries. Honduras Teen Summer Trip:
St Mark’s signature youth service activity is our biennial teen trip to Honduras. Students grades 9 through 12 have the opportunity to work with mountainous famers in Honduras through Sustainable Harvest’s Smaller Worlds Trip. Most recently, we had a group of 11 teens and 5 adults travel to Honduras summer 2010. If you have any questions, please contact the Director of Youth MinistriesClick here for more information.

Wake Up The Earth to benefit Honduras Mission Trip:
The Wake Up the Earth (WUTE) festival is a long-standing and fun-filled dinner/auction that supports our biennial youth trips to Honduras. This occasion allows our community to gather in celebration of our 20-year relationship with the people of Honduras and to support the work of our partner organization, Sustainable Harvest International and the Trinidad Conservation Project.
