There’s beer at that church?
More than 30 years ago, the former rector of St. Mark's, Jim Adams, was on sabbatical in England; he was struck by how there seemed to be a pub next to every church and that parishioners would gather together at the pub following the Sunday service and talk about the sermon and church business. Upon his return to St. Mark's, he proposed the concept of "Pub Lunch" and it was embraced by the parish. An amateur brewmeister, Reverend Adams helped establish the Pub in the parish hall, featuring draft and bottled beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages. Like any other pub, it has become a center of conversation over the past 30 years, run by a succession of volunteer Pub Stewards.
The current Pub Steward is parishioner Rick Weber, another amateur brewmeister who was interested in brewing a special beer that would be unique to St. Mark's. He began brewing "Winged Lion Lager" at a local brew-your-own facility, the Shenandoah Brewing Company. A loyal cadre of parishioners works with Rick to brew our traditional lager as well as a variety of seasonal and special occasion beers. You can join in on the fun by contacting Rick Weber to find out about the next trip to the brewery.
