Music

Music is woven into many aspects of life at St. Mark's. Choirs for adults and children, small ensembles and soloists regularly participate in worship services singing a variety of choral music and supporting congregational participation. Anchored in the regular offerings at services, special choral evensong services, and holy day offerings, the choir reaches the larger community as they participate in community services that can include diverse offerings such as early music, gospel, and longer choral concert pieces with orchestra appropriate to our sacred space. The St. Marks organ is a Holtkamp 31 rank instrument with three manuals.

The Music Studio also offers private instruction on piano and other instruments, while occasional Christian Education classes explore the meaning of hymns, spirituals, and masterworks like the St. Matthew Passion. Interim Director of Music, Jeffrey Workman, oversees the St. Mark's music program, serves as church organist, and directs interested parishioners to helpful Music Resources.

“A Celebration of Choral Music”

On Friday, November 13, at 8.00 PM, our choirs, under the direction of our fine Interim Director of Music, Mr. Jeffrey Ray Workman, will join in concert to fill our historic Nave with the sounds of thanksgiving and praise. They will offer a "composite mass" featuring some of their favorite movements, including "Kyrie" from the Durufle Requiem, "Gloria" from the Bach B-Minor Mass, and "Sanctus" from the Faure Requiem. A special feature of the evening will be the premiere performance of the choral anthem, “As newborn stars were stirred to song.” The anthem, written by noted composer and organist, Dr. David Hurd, long time Professor of Sacred Music and Director of Chapel Music at the General Theological Seminary in New York, is a gift of gratitude to Dr. Keith Scott Reas, our esteemed former Director of Music (May 1991-July 2009) and now Director of Music at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Chattanooga, TN. Both David and Keith will be on hand for this glorious occasion! A gala post-concert reception will follow. You won’t want to miss it! All are welcome to attend this grand celebration!
